Ni Hao is Hello (Up the Yangtze Clip)

“Up the Yangtze’ is a documentary of two parallel stories in the background of a tourist cruise boat “up” the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang), when the demolishing of houses and historical sites, and relocating of millions of people for building China’s Three Gorges Dam were underway. The documentary was shot from the eyes of the Chinese-Canadian director Yung Chang who accompanied his grandfather on a Yangtze River cruise in search of the China in his grandfather’s memory. The film is one of the most poignant films I have ever watched. There are layers of subtle justapositions and ironies. I like to think that any Chinese Language Program will benefit from having this film in its stock and developing a series of lessons both looking at the scenes in the film and the language.

Here is a clip.
