Theme units or structural units?

In a language class, do we organize the units by themes/topics or do we organize them by grammar structures or vocabulary frequency? what research supports each approach?

The following is a recent discussion thread on the ACTFL’s teacher forum. It is the most interesting thread I’ve read. A number of thoughts:

  • 1) when people mention about “show me the research”, what is understood as research is synonymous with “second language acquisition” research.
  • 2) has there to be research to back up your curricular choice even though you made it based on experience, past success, intuition and learner’s positive feedback?
